Questions about interlocking bricks
Do interlocking bricks still need mortar?
Far less of it. The units self align and lock together, so you use mortar sparingly rather than on every joint. That is where the savings in cement and in labour time come from.
Are they strong enough for a real house?
Yes, at 5 N per square millimetre and within what your drawings allow. They are used for fast track housing and boundary walls regularly. For load bearing external walls, check with your engineer first.
Do they actually save money?
Two ways. You buy less cement for mortar, and your wall goes up faster, which cuts labour days. On a boundary wall or a housing scheme that difference adds up quickly.
Do they need plastering?
Because the units are dimensionally precise for a tight interlock, many customers leave them fair faced and skip rendering entirely. If you want a plastered finish, they take it perfectly well.
