Iron Rod Price in Nigeria: 8mm, 10mm, 12mm, 16mm and 20mm

How rebar is really priced in Nigeria, what each diameter does structurally, the difference between high yield deformed bar and mild steel rounds, and how to check you were not sold underweight rod.

The iron rod price in Nigeria is quoted two ways, per length and per tonne, and most buyers overpay because they only check one of them. Steel is usually the second largest material cost after blocks and cement, and the easiest place to be sold short weight. This guide covers 8mm, 10mm, 12mm, 16mm and 20mm rod: what each size is for, how pricing works, and how to confirm in sixty seconds that you got the tonnage you paid for.

How iron rod is priced in Nigeria

The 12 metre standard length

Reinforcement bar in Nigeria is supplied in 12 metre lengths, often called a full length or full rod, though some merchants also stock 9m and 6m cuts. Always confirm length before comparing prices: a cheaper rod is often just a shorter one.

Per length and per tonne

Retail buyers buy per length: one price for one 12m rod of a given diameter. Convenient, and it hides whether the rod is full weight.

Underneath, the market runs on mass. Merchants buy per tonne, and every per length price comes from a tonne rate. Know that rate and you can calculate what any diameter should cost, and spot a marked up price instantly.

The conversion you need: weight per metre in kilogrammes equals the diameter squared, divided by 162. A 12mm rod is 144 divided by 162, which is 0.888 kg per metre.

Weight table: how many rods in a tonne

Nominal weights for full weight bar. Memorise the last column and no tonne quote will confuse you again.

Diameter Weight per metre Weight per 12m length Full lengths per tonne
8mm 0.395 kg 4.74 kg about 211
10mm 0.617 kg 7.40 kg about 135
12mm 0.888 kg 10.66 kg about 94
16mm 1.578 kg 18.94 kg about 53
20mm 2.466 kg 29.59 kg about 34
25mm 3.853 kg 46.24 kg about 22

Indicative iron rod price ranges

Steel prices move with the exchange rate, billet and scrap costs, diesel and electricity at the rolling mills, and haulage. The figures below come from a tonne rate of roughly ₦1.1 million to ₦1.5 million, a realistic planning band, but that rate genuinely changes month to month. Budget from these, then get a dated quote before you buy.

Diameter Indicative price per 12m length Notes
8mm ₦5,200 to ₦7,100 Bought in bulk, usually bundled
10mm ₦8,100 to ₦11,100
12mm ₦11,700 to ₦16,000 Most used size on residential jobs
16mm ₦20,800 to ₦28,400
20mm ₦32,500 to ₦44,400
25mm ₦50,900 to ₦69,400 Usually special order

To work it out yourself: take the current tonne price, divide by 1,000 for the price per kilogramme, then multiply by the weight per length above. At ₦1,300,000 per tonne a 12mm rod should be about 10.66 x 1,300, roughly ₦13,850. Asked ₦17,000, you now know exactly what you are paying for.

What each rod diameter is actually for

8mm: stirrups, links and binders

8mm is not main reinforcement. It is bent into the loops wrapping the main bars, stirrups in beams, links or binders in columns, usually at 150 to 200mm centres and closer near supports. Those loops resist shear and stop main bars buckling outward. Widening stirrup spacing to save a few thousand naira per beam directly cuts that beam’s shear capacity, and it is the most dangerous economy on Nigerian sites.

10mm: slabs, lintels and light work

10mm handles simple suspended slabs on short spans, lintels over doors and windows, staircase reinforcement, and distribution bars running the secondary direction of a slab. On a bungalow it shows up mainly in lintels and ground floor slab mesh.

12mm: slabs, beams and columns

12mm is the workhorse of Nigerian residential building and the size you will buy most of: main reinforcement in suspended slabs, typically at 150 to 200mm centres both ways, main steel in ordinary beams, and column reinforcement in modest bungalows and boundary walls.

16mm: beams, columns and foundations

16mm goes where loads step up: main bars in beams carrying a floor above, column reinforcement in duplexes and anything with a suspended slab, and bottom steel in footings and pad bases.

20mm and above: heavy beams, columns and foundations

20mm is used in long span or heavily loaded beams, columns carrying several floors, raft foundations and pile caps. If a drawing calls for 20mm and someone offers 16mm, refuse. Bar area scales with diameter squared, so 16mm has only about 64 percent of the area of 20mm. That is a 36 percent loss of steel, not a small substitution.

High yield deformed rebar vs mild steel round rod

High yield deformed rebar Mild steel round rod
Common grade Grade 500 (500 N/mm² yield) Grade 250 (250 N/mm² yield)
Surface Ribbed and deformed Smooth and round
Bond with concrete Mechanical grip from the ribs Friction only
Correct use All structural reinforcement Binding, light links, fabrication
Relative price Higher per tonne Lower per tonne

Grade 500 rebar has twice the yield strength of Grade 250 mild steel, and its ribs lock into concrete so the two act as one material. A smooth round rod can slip inside concrete under load, which is why structural codes require deformed bar for main reinforcement.

Mild steel round rod has legitimate uses and it is cheaper, which is exactly why it turns up where it should not. If you see smooth, unribbed rod going in as main steel in a beam or column, stop the work.

What TMT means and why it matters

TMT stands for thermo mechanically treated. After rolling, the hot bar is quenched with a controlled water spray that hardens its outer surface, while the still hot core cools slowly and tempers that skin from within. One bar, two structures: a tough outer ring and a ductile core.

Why that matters on your site:

  • Strength with ductility. The bar is strong but still bends rather than snapping under impact or when being bent into a stirrup.
  • Bendability. TMT bar can be bent and rebent cold without cracking at the bend. Older cold twisted bar cannot reliably do that.
  • Corrosion resistance. No surface torsional stress and a more uniform structure resist rust better. In salt laden Lagos air that is worth paying for.
  • Weldability. Lower carbon content than cold twisted bar, so welds do not turn brittle at the joint.

For structural work in Lagos, specify TMT Grade 500 deformed bar and ask for the mill certificate.

How to avoid buying underweight rod

Underweight rod is the commonest way buyers lose money on steel here. A bar rolled slightly under nominal diameter looks identical on the truck but weighs 10 to 15 percent less, and you paid by mass.

  1. Weigh a length. A 12m 12mm rod should be about 10.66 kg. At 9.2 kg, that consignment is roughly 14 percent light.
  2. Measure the diameter. Vernier caliper, on the plain part between ribs, in two places at right angles.
  3. Count the delivery. A tonne of 12mm is about 94 full lengths. If they hand you 105 and call it a tonne, the bars are underweight.

Buy by weight, insist on the mill certificate, and reject bar with deep flaking rust, cracks at bends or an inconsistent rib pattern.

Budgeting steel for a bungalow

A 3 bedroom bungalow of about 150 square metres with strip foundations, a ground beam, columns, a lintel band and no suspended slab generally uses 2.5 to 4 tonnes of reinforcement.

Element Bars usually specified
Strip footings and pad bases 12mm and 16mm main bars
Ground beam 12mm or 16mm main, 8mm stirrups
Columns 12mm or 16mm main, 8mm links at 150 to 200mm centres
Lintels and beams 12mm and 16mm, 8mm stirrups
Suspended slab (duplex) 12mm at 150 to 200mm centres both ways
Stirrups and binders 8mm throughout

Use that to sanity check a quote, never to design. Structural quantities come from your engineer’s bar bending schedule, the cheapest document on the entire project.

What this means for your project

Learn one conversion and one table and you control the iron rod price you pay. Ask for the tonne rate, calculate what each length should cost, weigh one bar on delivery and count the pieces. Those four steps routinely recover 10 to 15 percent on a steel order, several hundred thousand naira on a bungalow. Spend part of it on TMT Grade 500 with a mill certificate: reinforcement is the one part of your building you can never inspect again once concrete is poured.
